Description
Located alongside the A120 between Horsley Cross and Wix, this 3.3-acre irrigation pond is one of two lakes managed by the club. There are a total of 10 swims thoughtfully spaced along both the A120 bank and the village bank, providing ample opportunities for anglers. A red bar gate marks the entrance to this water, accessible from Colchester Road. The depths vary from 6 feet along the reed-lined margins to approximately 18 feet in the middle, depending on the water level.
As this is an irrigation reservoir, water levels can fluctuate, during lower water levels be aware of sloping banks and muddy conditions after periods of rain, though this is not pumped as often as Ramsey Brook (Wix) 1, some years it is not pumped at all.
Fish Stock
Originally, we stocked Catfish in this water; however, we have since reduced their population to focus on establishing and increasing the size of the Carp. As of August 2023, there are now only a handful of known Wels Catfish present. We are aware that they have bred, so we will continue to monitor their numbers and thin them as necessary to maintain a manageable population and prevent excessive sizes that could complicate fishing with Carp gear.
Our goal is to create a premium club-run Carp water at this location. Currently, it is estimated that there are between 60 and 70 Carp in the pond. With additional stockings planned for 2023 and 2024, we aim to introduce a total of 15 fish over 20lbs, along with 5 mid-doubles from proven growing strains. As a result, the Carp stock now consists of approximately 20-25 fish weighing around 20lbs, with at least one fish expected to approach the upper 30s by spring.
To ensure high growth rates for the Carp, we will continue to net and remove smaller Carp and silver fish as needed. This proactive approach will help to maintain a healthy ecosystem, allowing the Carp to thrive and providing members with a premium Carp club water.
